Alors qu'en France on veut le surtaxer, qu'on le menace en Allemagne et qu'on le pirate depuis la Chine, force est de constater que dans un pays au moins on veut le protéger : le royaume-Uni, où va peut-être être votée une loi en sa faveur. Ouf !

Un amendement proposé par un certain Lord Lucas, un conservateur, à une loi en vigueur autoriserait en effet les moteurs de recherche à utiliser tout le contenu du web indexable (le fameux Public Indexable Web) et de les ré-utiliser selon une licence légale non-exclusive, en un mot un éditeur ne pourrait se plaindre de voir une partie de son contenu repris par exemple sur Google News, voire, pour étendre une maison d'édition ayant laissé traîner un ouvrage numérisé ne pourrait se plaindre de le voir repris sur Google books.

A noter que selon notre source, cette licence légale (dérogeant à la protection des droits d'auteur et de protection de la propriété intellectuelle) irait plus loin que le Fair use américain et bien entendu serait une avancée de droit considérable au regard des autres législations européennes, il faut ainsi rappeler que si Google est titulaire d'une autorisation légale ou judiciaire (voire même tacite) dans la majorité des pays européens, rien ne va actuellement aussi loin que cette proposition d'amendement et ne vise essentiellement que le moteur de recherche de données web stricto-sensu, en témoigne ainsi le contentieux judiciaire dans lequel s'enferre Google news en Belgique, ou Google Books en France, etc.
