A la fin du mois d'octobre 2007, Google mettait en ligne dans l'espace dédié aux webmasters un outil permettant de définir la cible géographique d'un site internet, il était donc question de vous permettre de lui préciser si votre site était destiné en priorité aux internautes de tel ou tel pays. Une aubaine certainement et sans doute une tentation d'essayer d'améliorer le positionnement de votre site sur l'une ou l'autre des extensions locales du moteur de recherche favori des internautes du monde entier. Mais est-ce vraiment le cas ?

Pour le savoir nous avons procédé à un petit test d'indexation en vérifiant comment en réalité Google opérait à la localisation du site et les moyens qui sont à sa disposition pour y parvenir. Un test commencé peu après le buzz fait autour du lancement de la nouvelle fonction citée plus haut et que nous considérons aujourd'hui suffisamment poursuivi pour être parlant.

Les moyens de déterminer la nationalité de votre site.

Faisant fît de l'habituelle rengaine sur le caractère big brother du moteur, nous avons réduit notre champ de recherche aux seules informations véritablement utiles pour déterminer la localisation géographique d'un site internet savoir :

1. l'adresse web (nom de domaine et extension);
2. l'adresse physique (IP du serveur d'hébergement);
3. les renseignements collectés via Google Webmaster Tools.

Les conclusions.

Au 12 décembre 2007 : Google détermine en priorité la localisation géographique de votre site et donc votre marché cible en tenant compte de son extension de nom de domaine (si extension locale) et en second plan de l'adresse IP de son serveur (domaines généraux).

Une surprise de taille : la modification de la cible de votre site via Google Webmaster Tools ne semble produire aucun effet.

Un test qui va satisfaire sans nul doute les sociétés commercialisant des noms de domaine.
